International Exhibition of Young Inventors (IEYI) 2014

The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), as the organizer of the International Exhibition of Young Inventors (IEYI) 2014 in Jakarta announced on Nov. 2, 2014 the winners of competition under the theme “Creating a Better Future Through Innovation”.
IEYI is an annual event created since 2004 for the youth to exhibit their creativity in invention and innovation.  The first IEYI was held in Japan, organized by Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII).
The exhibition displays youth inventions from over 30 countries members in the category like: Disaster Management; Education and Recreation; Food and Agriculture; Green Technology; Safety and Health; and Technology for Special Needs.
About 202 inventions were displayed during the Jakarta 2014 exhibition. The participants who received the most gold medals were from Taiwan, with 13 gold medals, followed by Indonesia and Japan with two gold medals each, and Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines with a gold medal each.
The four Indonesian students who received the gold medal were Dayu Laras Wening and Luthfia Adila from State High School No. 3 in Semarang, Central Java, and Naufal Rasendriya Apta and Archel Valiano from Islamic school Al Azhar No. 26 in Yogyakarta.
Luthfia and Dayu created a borax detector stick, a tooth-pick-sized stick that turned orange when placed in food containing the chemical. Their invention answers public concerns about the wide use of the hazardous substance to preserve food.
Naufal and Archel won their medals for making a helmet equipped with a sign lamp for motorcyclists.
